The Benefits of Using a HID Ballast

The HID ballast is an electronic device that controls the brightness of the light. It can be used with input voltages ranging from nine to thirty-two volts. Normally, automotive ballasts operate at 12 or thirteen volts, but HID bulbs need a much higher voltage to begin. A good HID ballast will be capable of providing two to three times that voltage. Listed below are some of the benefits of using a HID ballast.

HID ballasts are designed to provide a high initial voltage to ignite the lamp, and then to gradually decrease the voltage to a stable level. When replacing a lighting ballast, always remember that they contain potentially hazardous materials and should be recycled if possible. There are three types of lamps used in HID lighting systems: HPS, metal halide, and mercury. These lamp types require different ballasts depending on their lifetimes.

A high-quality HID ballast should be able to support several different kinds of HID bulbs. A universal HID ballast, for example, can work with multiple car models. HIDs are compatible with several different color temperatures and bulb types. Xentec offers a universal ballast for different types of lights and bulbs. One type of HID ballast will not work with a car that has a 24V system.

If the lights on your HID headlights are flickering or dimming, it is possible that the HID ballast is defective. A few signs of a bad HID ballast include a perforated, melted, or swollen casing. Alternatively, the HID ballast may simply be causing the car's alternator or battery to die. The repair is relatively simple if you use a good quality ballast repair kit.

While a good HID ballast may seem like a minor issue, it is essential for 100% reliability. A high-quality HID ballast will last a long time without needing replacement. Choose a ballast that is resistant to heat, dust, and age. Some manufacturers are known for their quality and even offer warranties. GenXenon and Xentech HID are examples of some of the best manufacturers of HID ballasts.

For cars with an HID kit, it is best to purchase one that is Canbus compatible. Using a regular HID ballast on a vehicle that does not have a Canbus system will confuse the system and result in constant error warnings. Additionally, a CANBUS ballast is not compatible with all bulbs, so be sure to check the specifications of your vehicle before purchasing. Once you have a proper HID kit, you're ready to install the lights.

A HID ballast warms up the HID bulb, so that it can generate the initial voltage needed to turn on the HID bulbs. If the ballast is turned off too quickly, it may deliver too much power, reducing the bulb's lifespan. Too much power can also damage the electrodes, reducing the light's lifespan. And, if you're in the dark, the HID bulbs aren't producing enough light, either.
